Guidelines for the 2024 ACS BIOT
Van Lanen Distinguished Service Award

Purpose:
The James M. Van Lanen Distinguished Service Award is intended to recognize an individual for outstanding contributions to the ACS Division of Biochemical Technology through committed and sustained service. This award was established in 1985. The award nominations will be judged according to criteria as set forth in this document.
Award:
At the ACS annual meeting for which BIOT chooses to program, an award of a commemorative plaque will be made on behalf of the Division by the Division Executive Committee. The award will be presented to the recipient at the conference.
Eligibility:
The Van Lanen Distinguished Service Award is open to all who have contributed to the development of the Division of Biochemical Technology.
Evaluation:
Nomination packages will be evaluated by a committee established by Awards Chairman for the Division of Biochemical Technology in the American Chemical Society. The committee will consist of a combination of previous awardees and members of the current Division Executive Committee.
Criteria:
The nominations will be judged based on the impact on the development of the Division through service. Service may include exceptional leadership activities, significant new program or initiative development, significant existing program or initiative enhancement, extensive and sustained operational effort, exceptional technical program organization and/or other impactful activities on behalf of the Division.
Nomination Procedure:
All nominations are conducted by self-nomination. The nomination procedure includes:
a) Establishment of an account within the online submission portal (located at acsbiot.submit.org) with the following information: name, exact title, institution/organization, contact information, membership status in the American Chemical Society, and proposed award citation (25 words or less).
b) A letter addressed to the selection committee which provides a complete description of the nominee’s service contributions to the Division of Biochemical Technology for which the award is intended. The letter should include of a listing of the position(s) held within BIOT (elected, appointed and volunteer positions are all valid and valued) and the associated period(s) of service along with a summary of the activities conducted during the service and, most helpfully, the impact of those activities. This letter must be 2 pages or less in length. This letter is submitted by the nominee to the online submission portal.
